We have seen a rise in issues with Eduroam connections on systems running MacOS, related to a feature called Private Relay. As of present, Private Relay is not supported on Eduroam, and should be disabled to ensure optimal network behavior.
Symptoms
- Safari is slow to load pages such as UDel.edu, Canvas, or other pages, sometimes intermittently. Other browsers may be unaffected
- Software such as RStudio is unable to download packages, often with the error “
Error in `contrib.url()`: ! trying to use CRAN without setting a mirror“ - Network behavior improves when connected to a hotspot or when not connected to Eduroam
Any or all of the above behaviors may be seen in affected systems.
Solution
Turn off Private Relay for Eduroam
You can find detailed and up-to-date instructions on Apple’s support page, where you can select instructions for your particular version of MacOS.
- Open your System Settings app
- In the sidebar, locate and click on “Network“
- Click Wi-Fi, and then click “Details” next to Eduroam
- Turn “Limit IP address tracking” off.
